Most students I see aren't bad at maths. They've usually missed a few steps along the way, or decided they're not a maths person. My job is to find the gaps, fill them, and get them practising until it sticks.
Start by finding the gaps
I went through the same NSW syllabus the kids I tutor are doing now, so I know the topics that tend to trip people up. In the first lesson I work out where the gaps actually are, then we go back and fix the foundation before moving forward.
Build confidence, not just answers
A lot of students freeze the moment numbers show up, and that does more harm than the maths itself. I had topics I found hard too. What helped was slowing down and checking my working rather than rushing. I try to give students that same calm, so a test feels like questions they've already practised.
Explain it until it clicks
I explain things a few different ways until one lands, usually with a worked example and a quick diagram rather than a wall of theory. We do plenty of practice questions, and for HSC students we work through past papers so the exam holds no surprises. Lessons are in person and relaxed.
